GAPP Certified

The Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP) of the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) serves eligible children under 21 years of age who are medically fragile and in need of medically necessary skilled nursing care and/or medically necessary personal care support.

Non-Skilled Services

Home Health Aides (HHAs) are part of the in-home care team for medically fragile children. While they do not perform medical tasks that require a nurse, they provide essential support that complements nursing care, including:

1. Personal Care Assistance

  • Bathing, grooming, and dressing: Helping with daily hygiene routines.
  • Toileting and diapering: Assisting with bathroom needs, changing diapers, and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Mobility assistance: Supporting safe movement around the home, helping with repositioning to avoid bedsores, and assisting with transfers.

2. Basic Health Monitoring

  • Recording vital signs: Tracking basic vitals like temperature, pulse, and respiration, if trained.
  • Observation and reporting: Noting any changes in the child's condition and promptly reporting to nurses or caregivers.

3. Feeding and Nutrition Support

  • Assisting with meals: Helping the child eat or feeding them if needed.
  • Tube feeding support: Under nurse supervision, aiding with non-medical aspects of feeding, such as positioning and cleaning up after feeds.

4. Developmental and Social Support

  • Engaging in activities: Encouraging play, reading, or other age-appropriate activities to stimulate mental and emotional development.
  • Social interaction: Providing companionship, comfort, and emotional support.

5. Light Housekeeping Related to Care

  • Cleaning care equipment: Keeping medical and care supplies clean and organized.
  • Maintaining a safe environment: Ensuring the child's space is tidy and free of hazards.

In essence, Home Health Aides provide essential daily living support that allows medically fragile children to remain safe, comfortable, and engaged at home, supplementing the work of nurses and other medical staff.
